Paradise

Patti was a lost soul who was looking for a friend.
She'd sold up her home to escape from the man
Who'd divorced her for no reason other than "you know"
But anyone can tell you that's no reason at all.

We'd met by the statue not two days before
I was a tourist in a foreign land, just like her.
We took a ride down the coast. Maybe fifty miles or more.
Just enough to say we'd been away but not too far.

It was a hot sweaty day but still ended too soon
So rather than split we went back to my room.
We laid on the bed just chewing the fat.
An' I swear at that point I didn't mean to do any more than that.

But she wanted to freshen up, walked to the washroom
After peeling off the T-shirt that clung to her skin
Even though she didn't turn around or look my way
A man's just a man at the end of the day

I waited just long enough for her skin to get wet.
Still not knowing if I should join her or stay on the bed
Where I was reading a book about the creation of man
An' it made me wonder if I should start it all again.

I slipped in behind her and she let out a sigh.
I wasn't sure if she was happy or sad when she cried,
But there was something about her that I'd never let go
So maybe it's just as well that I didn't know.
