I went to see old Smokey Joe
Who keeps a cafe, down in
But when he said he'd like to see my show
It was the last thing on my mind.
Well Smokey's been around a long long years
Running hoots and honky bars
But when he said he dug the really big stars
It was the last thing on my mind.
Where Smokey got his name well you can guess
From the colour of his skin and smoking grass
We always knew that he was into that scene
But I never knew that he really dug me.
I said o.k. then Smokey come on along
Just sit right down and enjoy the song
But when he said let's jam and really get it all on
It was the last thing on my mind.
I always knew he had a red guitar
But I only thought his music went that far
But when he said that he himself was a star
It was the last thing on my mind.
Well years ago old Smokey had a rock'n'roll band
Who toured the country doin' one night stands
With a string of big hits and a show on TV.
I can't work out why he owns a cafe.
And so we had a jam down at the gate
And I must confess it was a really good date
But when the owner let us play on two hours late
It was the last thing on my mind.
The last I seen of Joe I had a surprise
He had grown his hair long and had some shades on his eyes
His whole appearance was a walking disguise
It was the last thing on my mind.
Well once again ol' Smokey's made it really big
An' every night again he's doing a gig
He's sold his cafe, bought a new guitar
And once again ol' Smokey Joe's a big star,
Oh yeh you know that he is.
